Vine type or bush type?

If you are starting growing tomatoes for processing purpose in open field condition, you better select determinate type, it also called bush type. It is because bush type tomato plants are bushy, and there is no hard rule that the bush type tomato plants require support and training. Vigorous and rigorous pruning are also not required if you are growing tomatoes of the bush type. Growing tomatoes of bush type requires mulching to protect the tomato fruits from damage.

Growing tomatoes of bush type lowers the cost of growing tomatoes through the elimination of the training and pruning operations. Growing tomatoes of bush type makes the growing tomatoes comfortable. If you want to be profitable in the occupation of growing tomatoes in large commercial as well as for processing purpose in open field, you better select tomato variety of the bush type.

If you are growing tomatoes of semi-determinate type in large commercial scale, you have to work rigorously and vigorously. Tomato of semi-determinate is also called vine type. Growing tomatoes of the vine type and indeterminate vine type will require enough labor and capital for training and pruning. You can better start growing tomatoes of vine type in greenhouse. If you are growing tomatoes of vine type, watch the plants and their vine characteristics. If any body wants to start growing tomatoes in greenhouse, you should select tomato cultivars of vine type. If you can manage enough cheap labor for pruning and training, you can grow tomatoes of vine type.

Growing tomatoes of the vine type requires timely support, training and regular, rigorous and vigorous pruning operations for the tomato plants. Training helps the tomato plants of the vine type to expose the foliage to the sunlight, and reduces the fruit damage due to fruit rot. Support must be given and training must be carefully done, otherwise the shoots of tomato plants of the vine type will break as the fruit weight increase in the tomato plants of vine type.

To make growing tomatoes successful, farmers must buy good tomato seeds of an appropriate tomato variety; they must buy the tomato seeds from reliable vegetable seed store. They can take the information of the tomato variety from the local agriculture office of their country, or vegetable research centre, vegetable department of the local and or state university. To be successful in growing tomatoes, they should decide the tomato varieties based on the market demand. For good harvest and of quality tomato fruits, hybrid tomato cultivars of medium to large fruit size are better preferred. Private vegetable seed producing companies are working to develop high yielding tomato varieties.

Besides, some are also growing tomatoes for research works whereas some are also growing tomatoes for their hobby in their vegetable garden. All these points are considered for the selection of tomato variety. First, selection is vine type or bush type. Then, second is hybrid tomato or open pollinated tomato variety. Third is large size or medium or small fruit size tomato. These all depend on the purpose and preference of people and personal preference too.
