Climate and season

If it is very hot climate in your place, it is grown in greenhouses with cooling facilities. If it is cold climate, it is grown in the greenhouses with warming facility. Growing tomato requires quality seeds of quality tomato variety. In cold climate tomato seeds are sown in greenhouses, and hotbeds enclosed with water color. In hot and humid climate the tomato seeds are sown in greenhouses with cooling humidity control facilities. Growing tomatoes is possible outdoors if the climate is warm; that is, warm climate is neither hot nor cold.

More precisely, growing tomato will give better harvests in the dry warm climate where the temperature prevails between 18 and 300C. Growing tomato will not be successful where temperature goes below the lower limit. In the low temperature, the tomato plants will be susceptible to frost injury. Growing tomatoes cannot be successful as well in the region where the temperature goes above the 300C.

The very low and very high temperature will lower fruit set and the yield. Some varieties tolerate frost and some tolerate some moderate heat. High and low temperatures both deteriorate foliage as well as fruit quality. Growing tomatoes requires clear warm days for vegetative growth as well as fruiting. Season without rain is preferable for growing tomato as well as for the ripening of the fruits. The days without rain favor tomato fruit ripening in the plants.

Here we are concerned for the duration of tomato plants that they will survive. If the atmospheric temperature is between 18 to 300C, soil fertility status is very high and soil moisture is also ample, the humidity is not so high, the duration of tomato plants for fruit setting and fruit development will be higher. If any of above factors becomes abnormal, the duration of the tomato plants will be shorter with respect to the growth and development of vegetative, floral and fruit.

People are growing tomatoes outdoors in the season of late spring and summer and early autumn in temperate countries. In developed countries like Japan, USA, and Europe where there are the seasons of cold and snowy winter, farmers are growing tomatoes in greenhouses in the season of winter too. Growth of tomato seedlings, tomato plants and tomato fruits are slow in the season of early spring and late autumn in temperate climatic countries. But; the growth of tomato seedlings, tomato plants and tomato fruits are slow in the seasons of winter in subtropical countries. So, growing tomatoes outdoors should be adjusted accordingly.

To manage growing tomatoes in winter in the countries of subtropics, tunnel or tunnel can be used. For it, ultraviolet proof polythene or simple polythene can be used for the construction of tunnel house for growing tomatoes and tomato seedlings. In tropical and subtropical countries where there is huge rainfall, leading farmers are growing tomatoes in greenhouses or tall house constructed with less expensive ultraviolet proof polythene.

I like to add information that ultraviolet proof polythene lasts for about five years and the price of it is not more than double price of ordinary polythene, but the life of ordinary polythene is hardly for six months. So, be careful to decide the type of polythene you are going to select for the construction of the tunnel for growing tomatoes in winter in subtropics.
