Cherry Tomato

Cherry tomato is mini-tomato. Generally, cherry tomato is indeterminate. Breeding have been in progress to develop semi-determinate as well as determinate tomato cherry tomato too. There are several varieties of cherry tomato. Why do we start growing tomatoes of cherry tomato instead of growing tomatoes of commercial hybrid varieties of medium and large sized fruits? Sometimes, people have seen small size tomato either in grocery store or in the vegetable garden of their friend’s house. The fruits of the cherry tomato look so beautiful that the friends want to start growing tomatoes of cherry tomato. They too hear importance of the consumption of the cherry tomato as well as the fruiting pattern of it; this way, they too want to start growing tomatoes of cherry type and see bunches of the cherry tomato fruits in the their own vegetable garden.

Nature has engineered cherry tomato. The fruits of cherry tomato vary from pea size to the size of golf ball. The shape of cherry tomato can be spherical, oval or oblong. Oblong tomato fruit looks like plum size tomato. Cherry tomato is popular even though it is sparsely seen in the super market and grocery. Cherry tomato fruits are sweeter than the fruits of the commercial tomato hybrids. Popularity of the fruits of cherry tomato is growing since the fruits have real flavor of tomato and the fruit looks like black grapes. Growing tomatoes of the cherry kind in small vegetable garden is cheaper and easier than growing tomatoes of expensive tomato hybrids. The popularity of cherry tomato is also growing since the fruits have real flavor of tomato, size of the fruits is like the size of the grape.

Some gardeners who are not growing tomatoes of cherry type want to start growing tomatoes of this kind in their vegetable garden for their home consumption. Some very creative gardeners want to start growing cherry tomato indoor as well as outdoor. If growing cherry tomato is intensively managed with enough fertilization, manuring and watering; they can harvest fruits of cherry tomato throughout the year. Even a single cherry plant can fruit hundreds of fruits.

Once people buy seeds of cherry tomato, they will sow the seeds and transplant the seedlings. After a few days, they will start harvesting the fruits of the cherry tomato in their own vegetable garden. They can extract seeds from the fruits of the cherry tomato and protect the seeds for growing them next year. The plants and fruits of the cherry tomato raised from the seeds extracted and protected last year will be identical once the soil nutrients, watering management and season are identical. The fruits and plants of the cherry tomato variety will generally be identical generation to generation in the vegetable garden. They do not lose the vigor, fruiting tendency, fruit flavor, fruit size and almost all the traits whatever may be the generation of the cherry tomato seeds.

Some experts of gardening of cherry tomato recommend that people start growing tomatoes of the cherry kind in containers. Some advise to start growing tomatoes of cherry kind in a small corner of their vegetable garden. But all advise that growing tomatoes should be done in the location where there is ample sunlight. The location in the kitchen garden must get six hours of shun shine at least. I recommend you that you can start growing cherry tomato either in container or at a corner of your vegetable garden where there is ample sun light. If you give the plants enough manure, fertilizers and water; they will yield more. If you do not give enough manure, fertilizers and water, the fruit bearing will not be so heavy.

Growing tomatoes of cherry type is not successful in large commercial purpose. Cherry fruits are small and so they require many laborers for harvesting which will be very expensive. Growing cherry tomato is generally recommended in kitchen gardens for home consumption.
